How-to: Starting Mordheim in 2012!

If you couldn't tell, I'm a huge fan of GW's original fantasy skirmish game, set amidst the burnt out mega-city of Mordheim. Support for the game was discontinued in 2004, but the ruleset lives today (for free!,) as do most of the miniatures, making it one of, if not the most budget-friendly Games Workshop games. Unfortunately, due to re-boxing on some of the original Mordheim components, it can be hard to track down what you need to start playing. Hopefully I can help to clear up some of your confusion in getting started. (Note: Many of the image links have broken since 2012 -- sorry)

Independence day!

It's been a long, fun, and downright exhausting week (& weekend) out here. I started working construction again, had an interview with Games Workshop, played a show, and still managed to keep up with my D&D group. I'm also very inspired to start converting my Expedition to Castle Ravenloft book to 4th edition. I had been talking one day with a fellow gamer/buddy/co-worker and I really realized how much I love the classic vampire setting. It'll be a welcome relief, if it happens, from the ridiculousness of True Blood and Twilight.

Mordheim Town Square

This is (finally) the first completed piece of Mordheim terrain. The town square is from the original Mordheim boxed set, and although it doesn't provide a lot of cover or area terrain, makes for a great centerpiece in your city streets.

Defeat at the hands of terrain!

40k is a game is drastically defined by how much terrain you use. Tournaments are renowned for having few pieces of Line of Sight blocking terrain and very few area terrain pieces. Home games can often have more pieces of terrain than you will ever see, even in stores. Personally, I like to play with a "medium" amount of terrain, but I also enjoy cluttered cityfights. These places are chock full of nooks and crannies to ensure you have tactical advantage over your opponent.

6th edition rumormill & how to break your low points 40k game

Much discussion is flying around recently about the 6th edition rumors posted on Blood of Kittens. It's important to take all of this stuff with a grain of salt, because all of it could turn out to be false. Still, numerous sources have posted all over the internet about 6th edition coming soon, and although we are not supposed to place trust in quantity, someone out there probably does know what they're talking about.

Musings on yet another Dark Eldar launch

I've been thinking a lot about the latest GW releases. Not because I'm a Dark Eldar player - although I do have a box of wyches, Lelith, and an Archon. No, I've been thinking about them because it's a rare moment in GW's generally wishy-washy release trend. Yeah, this will be one post amongst many on the blogosphere that criticizes GW's policies.

List Building: The journey to 1750 with Craftworld Eldar

Hey folks! I posted some days ago about some topics I'd like to talk about. I've spent some time browsing through many other blogs (mainly on FTW Blogroll #3) to come up with some decent subjects, the whole time forgetting one that pertains to where I'm at now. List building!

RIP Nyx, and the week without the camera...

Kurei and Nyx
I've been slacking on the posting recently, but the painting has kept up. What has kept me? Well, Zni has been spending the weekend preparing for Free Spirit Gathering, where she will be working. As well, our bird Nyx has been acting curious for some time. That is, until today, when she passed away...

What a long, strange trip it's been!

The originals!
I got into this hobby a long time ago, but put it aside due to not having anyone to play with, and not having the money to support the hobby fully. As a kid, though, I really loved the GW models. These guys were some of the first I ever painted. The tactical sergeant on the right is painted with Testor's model car paints. I'm fairly sure he wasn't primed, either. To some degree, I'm sure the Skaven Warlock in the middle is painted with Testor's as well; This mini is a testament to how much I copped out back in the early days. This guy barely has 3 colors on him, and very little effort was made to paint him. I originally played Skaven on my first go-around of Mordheim.

Blood Angels: Classic Death Company

Metal Blood Angels Death Company
Today I decided to finish up the basing on some mostly painted miniatures, namely my classic BA Death Company squad. I got these guys from a good friend, stripped them of their original paintjobs, and went to work.

Dire Avengers progress; DnD Dark Sun Warlock

Ulthwe Dire Avengers WIP - highlighted!
Well, I did get some progress done on the Dire Avengers today, but not as much as I had hoped. I'm not really pushing it -- I want to be able to make it to my Dungeons and Dragons session on time for once. We're playing 4th edition Dark Sun, and I wanted to use the other half of my Battle Wizards box for my character.

WIP Ulthwe Dire Avengers & Painting Guide

Ulthwe Dire Avengers - Work in Progress
Wednesdays are not typically a day that I get a lot done. My goal with this blog is to be able to update it every day with my progress, though, and I plan on sticking to it. So I did some work on 5 more Dire Avengers to add to the Ulthwe DA squad I posted previously.

Mordheim Warlock (mostly) done

The Warband: Mercucio Enterprises, LLC
While I've listed most of these guys as done, I'd say they're only done for now. There's lots more washing and highlighting I could do on the youngbloods and captain (among others,) because originally I felt like keeping a 'grimy' feel to the warband.

Bronze Hormagaunt wip

Colors Used : Dwarven Bronze, Tin Bitz, Bubonic Brown, Sunburst Yellow, Blazing Orange, Fortress Grey, Badab Black.

Mordheim

Mordheim Marienburg Warband - Youngbloods with Captain (center)

I started playing Mordheim back in 2000 or so when it was released. It's a game where each player takes control of a small warband that makes its money venturing into the "City of the Damned" and collecting Wyrdstone.
